Introduction

For this week’s assignment, I was tasked to create a protagonist to act as a central character for my narrative based upon the Time Capsule project. Once created, I had the options to storyboard my narrative in several options such as: a storyboard, photo-essay, stop-motion animation, or a two-page spread comic book sequence.

Protagonist Creation

For my protagonist, I began to imagine my character living in the 22nd Century in the United States as he lives during the year of 2145. Upon my process, I have wrote a persona that outlines his personal traits and more information about who he is.

It’s Storyboarding Time!

Once I have created a protagonist for my narrative, I began to think that the narrative should start with with some influences of my personal life. So I ultimately decided that the protagonist will find the time capsule at a family home in reference to my family’s real-world living location: Jacksonville, Florida.

For the storyboarding process, I have thought of multiple scenarios that I wrote out for my protagonist and wrote in detail to help me think and visually represent those scenes. I have written the below scenarios in a sequential-based order from left to right, top to bottom.

Creating The Visuals

As part of the storyboarding process, I decided to create a comic strip storyboard that was hand drawn by myself on my iPad. I have used an online template to serve as a foundation for my storyboard.

Self-Reflection Time!

Overall, I have enjoyed conducting the storyboarding parts into a narrative. I wanted to portray a theme to the narrative that emphasizes about the importance of family and culture, and acknowledging historical events regardless of what the future beholds. As my protagonist was portrayed as not knowing the purpose of the items within the time capsule, I thought it would be a great way to display this! In the end of the narrative, my protagonist ultimately places the family scrapbook as he realizes that both family and history matters a lot to him as they both intertwine as a central theme of the time capsule itself.

Within the persona of my main protagonist, I have included some interesting information about him as he had lived during the futuristic time of the year of 2145. So, I tried to include some of those elements within the narrative. One example was the high-speed transcontinental bullet train that travels from LA to Jacksonville within six hours. I imagined that the future would already have dramatically improved on social phenomenons like public transportation within the United States as the world advances with technology.

Though, I did not get to include all of the futuristic characteristics for my protagonist due to sake of time and keeping this narrative short and easy to read. If I had more time to continue and progress with the narrative, it would definitely be a compelling story for myself to conduct and compose together as I had many ideas cycling through my head when writing the scenes!

I also would like to note that I felt very proud of my hand drawings for the storyboarding process as they visually represent the scenes quite well for which I had originally thought of. Although I am not a great artist, I do feel like this process was very amusing to do. Ultimately, I realized the importance of mapping out ideas with visuals representing to showcase the audience on what I was trying to voice out my thoughts on!
